Are schools any more than FACTories?

"This is why schools are nothing more than FACTories for job position replacement parts."Michael Martine
 said in reply to
An Operating System for the Mind.....

This article is a very deep and engaging blog entry...encompasses 21stCentury Skills.....specifically, "the question isn't whether skills can be taught in isolation, but rather whether they must be taught in the context of some common base of knowledge and whether students ought to be tested on the basis of that knowledge."

I was not the only one.

Are your kids going APE?

  • A stands for accuracy (read the correct words)
  • P is for pacing (not too fast, not too slow, just right)
  • E is for expression (your voice goes up and down, gets loud and soft).

The Collie’s are an online project of the NSW Country Areas Program and have being running since 2003. "Collie" is a mischievous garden gnome who travels extensively, or engages in unusual activities, usually without telling anyone where he is going or what he is doing.
Collie has been to visit 10 different workers in your community and found out their roles and responsibilities. Can you discover which workers they were? You will need to research a number of helpers in your community and then try to work out which helpers Collie has visited
As part of Collie’s Helpers students need to complete research grids answering the following questions about each helper
  • What does this worker do?
  • Describe what this worker wears.
  • What equipment does this worker use?
  • What skills does this worker need?
  • Is this worker paid or a volunteer?
  • Does this worker work inside or outside?
  • Where is this worker found?
    Home, School, Community
This video conference will help you with your task!
You will meet 2 NSW police officers who will tell you all about their roles in the community and answer your questions.
Please note, only the first 10 schools to register for the question & answer section will be able to participate. Schools registering after the initial 10, will be able to stay and watch for the q&a session.

This media release is from the Mullumbimby High School P&C Association
in the hope that it may provide some balance to the misrepresentation of our school
in some of the state and national media.

Media Release
31st August 2009
Statement by Mullumbimby High School P and C Association
Mark Collinson: President.
Mullumbimby High School P and C extends its condolences to the family and friends of Jai Morcom, who passed away over the weekend.
The incident is a great tragedy, and the P & C will endeavour to support the family and the broader community in whatever way we can.
On behalf of the P & C I would like to extend my condolences to Jai's family. The incident has touched the entire community.
The P & C also gives full support to the Principal of Mullumbimby High School, its leadership team, and the rest of the staff.
As President, I am confident in the way student welfare and discipline is managed at MHS.
As a parent, I would like to state, that media reports of of a culture of violence and bullying are not reflective of the actual school culture at Mullumbimby High School.
Friday’s incident is very rare, and is certainly not typical of the school culture.
We are all shocked, and extremely saddened by the events of Friday 28th August. It is important that we stick together as a broader community and support our school and its leadership as well as its staff and students.
 Mark Collinson
President
