"A big thank you to all our clients who have provided feedback on the ETIS closure to the ETIS feedback email or have contacted the Director-General and the D-DGs.  

The feedback period ends this Friday November 2 so if you have not had the time to supply feedback, it is not too late to do so before the end of this week."

INVITATION TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK

We have been informed that the Strategic Information and Reporting Directorate, Office of Education, has identified that the Education and Training Information Service (ETIS) will be closed in December because of current staff cuts. The information and library services ETIS provides will no longer be available.

The Department will lose a service providing principals, teachers and counsellors as well as regional, state office and executive staff with specialised literature searches, alert services, historical services and cost-efficient supply of published research. Access to the archival collection of departmental publications dating from 1848 will also no longer be available. ETIS is a unique service in the Department used for decision making, policy development, professional learning, quality teaching and evidence based practice.

We invite you to give feedback during the 4 week consultation period which began on 8 October.  This is your opportunity to provide information and examples about how this closure will affect your work. 

You can use ETISfeedback@det.nsw.edu.au and/or forward your feedback to your D D-G until Friday November 2.  Please forward this email to your colleagues.

 RSL ANZAC Art Awards *DEADLNE EXTENDED* 09/11/12 @ 5pm

"The RSL ANZAC Art Award Council has carefully prepared the new RSL ANZAC Art Awards with the aim of encouraging all young people to think about what previous generations of soldiers, sailors and airmen have done to serve and defend this great country of ours."

Open to all NSW school students from Years 1-12, the long-running art award acknowledges the values of ANZAC, such as respect and remembrance in a visual context.

Shared from School Biz: "RSL NSW developed the ANZAC Art Project for all schools in NSW in the 1970s to encourage all school students to research, learn and appreciate the historical and cultural significance of Australia’s traditional links to ANZAC Day.

The ANZAC Art Award offers a colouring competition to primary students and a painting competition to secondary students.

Each of the six categories has an award certificate of Bronze, Silver and Gold for winning contestants along with cash prizes in each category. There is also The RSL Lifecare Award chosen from schools who submit at least five entries.

A special award and medal will also commemorate the outstanding service and commitment of the late President of the Teachers Sub-Branch of the Returned and Services League, Geoffrey William Falkenmire OAM.

The NSW Premiers Kokoda Prize will be awarded to an 18 year old student who will get to experience a true ANZAC tradition walking the Kodoka Track in Papua New Guinea.

 The competition closes on 2 November 2012 with the winners being announced before the end of term."

On this day, we call for teachers to receive supportive environments, adequate quality training as well as ‘safeguards’ for teachers’ rights and responsibilities...We expect a lot from teachers – they, in turn, are right to expect as much from us. This World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity for all to take a stand.

World Teachers’ Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994 - when it was created by UNESCO - celebrates teachers worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.

The International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) is an international association of policy and decision-makers in education, government and business dedicated to improving educational experiences and outcomes in all parts of the world. In their newsletter they wrote about "TAKE A STAND FOR TEACHING!" All teachers are welcome to join the association.

If you can't visit the Treasures Gallery in person, you can visit Treasure Explorer, a new online resource.

This site tells the stories behind the featured treasures, and provides lesson outlines and activities, created by teachers for students from upper-primary to upper-secondary levels.

There are games, quizzes, polls, and opportunities for teachers and students to share their own ideas and treasures.

It is well  worth the time exploring its content and potential.

SPRING has sprung and "Our Scarecrows are ready for action!!"

 Stage 2, years 3 and 4, have taken on the Scarecrow Challenge and you should see the reuslts!!

The challenge, part of a science and technology unit, has also gone out to all familes to design and make a family scarecrow to be displayed in the the school grounds.

All the scarecrows will all make their way to the garden on Monday 3 September from 9:10 am onwards.

I give a Gonski...Do you? Should you?

I have previously posted about the Gonski report released in February. I feel it is imperative that it be followed up and not swept under the mat to save MONEY $$$$. EDUCATION is our future and it is well worth finding the money to pay for it.


For those who are not yet aware of this important educational report I offer some info:

"A report into education finding in Australia handed down today by a panel of experts, led by businessman David Gonski, who, among many other credentials, is the Chancellor of the University of New South Wales. "The Gonski report on funding education has recommended a new model for school funding that would mean all students are entitled to a set level of funding regardless of where they go to school, disadvantaged schools receive more funding, and taxpayer funding for private schools is adjusted down based on parents' capacity to pay."

Barbara Bratzel literally wrote the book on the LEGO NXT with “Physics by Design with NXT Mindstorms” now in its 3rd edition, based on the classes she ran as a science teacher for over a decade at Shady Hill School (a preK-8 independent school in Cambridge, Massachusetts). In addition she has also been a consulting teacher at the Center for Engineering Educational Outreach at Tufts University. Barbara explains in the forward of her book: “engineering is a powerful tool in K-12 education, one that teaches critical thinking and a deeper understanding of mathematics and science concepts. More importantly, engineering gets kids excited—about science, about math, and about engineering itself. The first students who took Physics by Design are now in college and beyond. Why is cybersecurity awareness important?

Australians are increasingly relying on the internet in their everyday lives for banking, shopping, education and communication. It is, therefore, important that they are able to use the internet in a secure and confident manner. The government has established a range of initiatives to raise the awareness of Australian internet users about the importance of cybersecurity and the simple steps they can take to protect their personal and financial information online.

• Stop and think before you share any personal or financial information—about you, your friends or family. Don’t disclose identity information (drivers licence, Medicare No, birth date, address) through email or online unless you have initiated the contact and you know the other person involved.
• Don't give your email address out without needing to. Think about why you are providing it, what the benefit is for you and whether it will mean you are sent emails you don’t want.
• Be very suspicious of emails from people you don’t know, particularly if they promise you money, good health or a solution to all your problems. The same applies for websites. Remember, anything that looks too good to be true usually is.

NAPLAN ‘an expensive mistake’ - Education Review

More than 140 academics from various fields have signed a letter calling for the end of the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), saying the pressure on teachers and children to perform well on the tests is narrowing the curriculum and eroding time for quality teaching and learning.

We must insist on changing this testing culture. 

Why are we loosing so many valuable resources?

How many schools are aware of the new format of the NSW School Magazines and the teaching guides that accompany them?  

Each magazine has its own Teaching Guide which consists of two full lesson plans and four teaching ideas pages which have three activities each as well as a worksheet. 

Each focus is tied to an outcome of the NSW English syllabus and the English strand of the national curriculum.  There’s even a chart at the back that shows the specific focus.

Apart from providing a great resource that appeals to kids (there are comic strips, puzzles, poems, plays, stories, serials and so forth) and the Teaching Guides providing great lesson ideas, a subscription might even save the jobs of those who work for it full-time, given the news about restructuring.

 The lost positions in the organisational chart published at https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/psportfolio/functional-realignment reflect considerable reductions in support for schools in a number of areas, including literacy and numeracy, learning areas curriculum and policy support in all learning areas in a time when schools will want equitable support for implementing new curriculum K-12, PRC is not mentioned, The School Magazine looks like it may have fewer staff etc  – most major projects and programs across curriculum support, online teaching and learning including support, and professional learning are facing significant or complete reductions.

It is true that three positions will be lost from the seven-member English/Literacy team here in CLIC over the next six months: Leader Literacy (Annalies van Westenbrugge’s PEO position), a SEO2 literacy position and the CEO position (Group Leader, English/Literacy).In total about 200 positions have been shed from state office directorates in the Schools Portfolio, including all PEOs and CEOs in the curriculum area.

If you look at ‘functional realignment’ in the left hand menu, you will get access to the organisation charts for what appears to be our new area, Learning and Leadership, including Early Childhood & Primary Education and Secondary Education. Apart from the cuts, English and Literacy will no longer be part of the one team and will soon be divided into primary and secondary teams – an odd decision given that we are now embracing a K-10 syllabus.
